President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Saturday that over 1.5 million residents in the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa were without electricity after a night attack by Russian “kamikaze drones.”

The region’s energy regulator warned that repairs following the Friday strikes would take weeks, if not months.

“After the night strike by Iranian drones, Odessa and other cities and villages of the region are in darkness,” President Zelensky said.

“As of now, more than one and a half million people in Odessa region are without electricity.”

According to Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the presidential administration’s deputy head, the only places with power at the moment are important facilities like hospitals and maternity wards. He noted that, while the situation is still challenging, it is under control.

Before President Vladimir Putin launched troops to pro-Western Ukraine on February 24, the Black Sea port was a popular vacation spot for many Ukrainians and Russians.

The region’s governor, Maksym Marchenko, said Russia had assaulted the city with “kamikaze drones” overnight.

“As a result of the strike, practically all districts and communities in our region are without power,” he stated.

Mr Marchenko claimed that two drones were shot down by Ukrainian air defense units.

On Friday, Kyiv claimed the southern regions of the war-torn country, including Odessa, were experiencing the biggest power disruptions in days, following the latest round of methodical Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector.

On Monday, Russia launched scores of cruise missiles at crucial infrastructure in Ukraine, adding to the strain on the country’s already frail power supply.

Following humiliating military failures, Russia began targeting Ukraine’s infrastructure.

On Thursday, President Putin vowed to keep battering Ukraine’s energy grid despite an outcry against the attacks that have plunged millions into cold and darkness.
