A 10-year-old girl in Malton, North Yorkshire, has tragically died following an attack by her family dog.
The incident occurred on Friday, November 1, around 4:15 p.m., prompting an urgent response from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service after reports of a dog bite.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals and a bystander who rushed to assist, the girl succumbed to serious injuries at the scene.
Following the attack, a family member secured the dog inside a car, and responding officers later seized the animal, which is now in a secure kennel.

North Yorkshire Police reported that the dog is set to be destroyed following the girl’s death.
However, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, as it appears to be out of character for the dog.

The girl and the dog had a “close, loving relationship,” raising questions about what might have provoked the attack.
Police indicated that understanding the dog’s behavior is a key part of their inquiry, as they seek to explain why the attack occurred.
The girl has not been publicly identified, and her family has requested privacy during this difficult time. An autopsy is expected to take place soon.

In light of this incident, authorities urge the public not to speculate and to respect the family’s wishes.
The rise in dog attacks has become a concern in the U.K., with reported fatalities increasing in recent years.
Prior to 2021, the U.K. averaged about three fatal dog attacks annually, but has since seen that number rise significantly.
