2 police hurt in London stabbing not related to queen events

Two police officers were stabbed early on Friday, September 16, 2022, in central London, according to the London police department.

Speaking about the incident, the Metropolitan Police said that early on Friday, while on patrol near Leicester Square, officers came across a man brandishing a knife. They attempted to apprehend him, and as a result, were fatally stabbed.

The police force reiterated that the two policemen, a man and a woman, were stabbed and sent for medical care to the hospital.

The Metropolitan Police department has determined that the attack is not being classified as terrorism, and also the injuries are not life-threatening.

According to police chief Mark Rowley, one of the officers was seriously injured in the arm, potentially changing the course of her life, while the other officer was stabbed in the neck and chest but should fully recover. reported by ABC New.

A man in his 20s was detained on suspicion of causing serious bodily harm and assaulting a medical professional. The suspect was momentarily brought to a hospital as a precaution, according to the police, and a Taser was used during the arrest.

Even though Queen Elizabeth II is now lying in state in London, the incident did not take place close to any memorials, and police stated the injured policemen were not involved with the royal operation.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the attack “utterly appalling.”

“These brave officers were doing their duty and assisting the public at this momentous time for our country,” he said. “My thoughts and prayers are with them, their loved ones and police colleagues following this disgraceful attack.”
