Authorities in Texas are searching for Trever McEuen, 32, a capital murder suspect who fled just days before his trial was scheduled to begin. McEuen is said to have cut off his ankle monitor and set fire to the home of relatives he was staying with before disappearing.

McEuen’s daring escape has landed him on the Texas Department of Public Safety’s 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list, and as it stands, a combined $30,000 reward is being offered for genuine information leading to his capture.

McEuen was initially arrested following a SWAT standoff in connection with the fatal shooting of his neighbor, Aaron Martinez, 35, on May 1, 2023. He later admitted to the crime and was charged with capital murder, four counts of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, and homicide.

McEuen was supposed to appear in court for his trial on May 5, but on May 1, exactly one year after the death, he removed his ankle monitor and disappeared. This was his second release on bail after posting a total of $2 million.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has criticized the state’s bail laws following the escape. Calling the current bail system “broken and deadly,” Abbott is pushing for urgent bail reform to prevent violent offenders like McEuen from gaining temporary freedom.

“A violent criminal like McEuen charged with capital murder should never be released on our streets,” Abbott said in a statement. “That’s why I made bail reform an emergency item this legislative session.”

The Governor’s Office of Public Safety is offering $10,000 for tips, with an additional $10,000 each from the Kaufman County Crime Stoppers and Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, totaling $30,000 in rewards.

Law enforcement officials are urging the public to assist in locating McEuen by calling Texas Crime Stoppers at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477) or submitting tips anonymously through the Texas Department of Public Safety’s online system.

Authorities have emphasized that all tipsters will remain completely anonymous by law, regardless of the method used to submit information.

The manhunt for Trever McEuen has reignited public concern over the risks of pre-trial release for individuals charged with violent crimes. Officials remain hopeful that the significant reward will encourage someone with knowledge of McEuen’s whereabouts to step forward.
