A 6-year-old girl, Grace Hinderliter, has tragically died after being struck by a skid steer operated by her father on Saturday, November 9, in Oswego, New York.

The heartbreaking accident occurred on the family’s property around 12:39 p.m. on Margaret Street, as reported by Oswego County News Now and other local outlets.

Grace’s father, Jeffrey Hinderliter, was using the construction vehicle near a wood line when his daughter, who was playing nearby, came too close and was unintentionally struck.

According to police, Grace was out of her father’s view when the incident occurred. Despite immediate efforts by first responders, Grace was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This is a tragic event that has deeply affected the Oswego community,” said Oswego Police Chief Phil Cady, expressing the sorrow felt by many. “We have been coordinating with the family, school district, and first responders for assistance and counseling.”

Grace’s death has left her family, friends, and community in shock. Her summer day camp, Camp Foundations, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, remembering Grace as a bright light: “Her joy and love lit up any room, and she was a friend to all. Her smile could make anyone’s day better.”

The second grader at Kingsford Park School was described as a creative and loving girl who enjoyed dancing, crafting, and spending time outdoors. “Grace had a creative eye and loved to turn trash into art. She loved nature, being active, and most of all, she loved God,” her obituary stated.

The local community has rallied around the family, with a GoFundMe page raising more than $46,000 to assist with funeral expenses.

The Hinderliter family has also received an outpouring of support and condolences from those who knew Grace.

At this time, no criminal charges will be filed against Jeffrey Hinderliter, the Oswego Police Department confirmed.
