An 80-year-old man in Northern California has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder after allegedly shooting and killing a fellow hunter during a turkey hunting trip.

According to the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a call on Sunday afternoon at the Fremont Weir Wildlife Area in Knights Landing, located about 20 miles northwest of Sacramento.

There, they found 65-year-old Shawn Parrish with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the shooting occurred when John Lee, the suspect, fired his shotgun into the brush in an attempt to hunt turkeys. However, he allegedly failed to aim properly, resulting in a fatal shot to Parrish, who was also hunting in the same area.

Lee has been charged with second-degree murder and negligent discharge of a firearm. He was arrested and is currently being held on a $1 million bond. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday.
