Broadway is buzzing after Hell’s Kitchen star Kecia Lewis publicly called out fellow Broadway legend Patti LuPone for comments she deemed “offensive” and “racially microaggressive.”
The controversy erupted when LuPone described the sound of Hell’s Kitchen as “too loud” in a now-deleted video, prompting Lewis to respond with an open letter on her Instagram.
In her video, Lewis explained that LuPone had requested changes to the show’s sound design, claiming it was too loud.
She described LuPone’s actions as “rude” and rooted in privilege, stating, “These actions in my opinion are bullying.”
Lewis emphasized that such comments can perpetuate harmful stereotypes, especially when directed at a predominantly Black production.

LuPone, who is currently starring in The Roommate next to Hell’s Kitchen at the Booth Theatre, has not publicly responded to Lewis’s claims.
In her letter, Lewis pointed out that LuPone had also declined to sign a fan’s Playbill, saying, “I’m not signing a Hell’s Kitchen; they’re too loud.”
Lewis elaborated on the concept of microaggressions, explaining that they are subtle comments or actions that reflect biases based on race.
She argued that calling a predominantly Black show “loud” dismisses the artistry of the production and reinforces negative stereotypes.
Throughout the letter, Lewis highlighted the importance of respectful communication within the theater community.
“In our industry, language holds power,” she stated, urging LuPone to consider how her words could impact artists and audiences alike.
The response to Lewis’s video has been overwhelmingly supportive, with notable Broadway figures like Audra McDonald and LaChanze expressing their solidarity in the comments.

Lewis concluded her message by asserting that LuPone “owes us an apology, not flowers,” emphasizing the need for collaboration and respect among performers.
