President Donald Trump has agreed to delay the implementation of planned U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports for at least 30 days, this decision follows discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced the pause in a social media post on Monday.
The agreement comes just days after Trump also delayed tariffs on Mexican imports under similar terms, in both cases, the pauses were tied to commitments from Canada and Mexico to take stronger measures against fentanyl trafficking into the United States.
Canada has pledged to reinforce its border security as part of the deal, Prime Minister Trudeau revealed that his government will allocate $1.3 billion to enhance border control operations.
This investment includes deploying new helicopters, implementing advanced surveillance technology, and increasing the number of personnel dedicated to stopping the flow of fentanyl.

To further demonstrate Canada’s commitment, Trudeau announced the appointment of a “Fentanyl Czar” to lead efforts in combating the opioid crisis “Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border,” Trudeau stated.

— Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) February 3, 2025Trump confirmed the temporary suspension in a Truth Social post on Monday, he emphasized that Canada had agreed to take decisive action against fentanyl, which he described as a “deadly scourge” devastating American communities.
“I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30-day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured,” Trump wrote. He concluded his statement with, “FAIRNESS FOR ALL!”
Earlier on Monday, Trump also paused tariffs on Mexico after its president, Claudia Sheinbaum, committed to deploying 10,000 soldiers to the northern border. The move is intended to curb the influx of fentanyl into the United States.

According to U.S. authorities, the majority of fentanyl entering the country originates from Mexico. In 2024 alone, over 21,100 pounds of fentanyl were seized at the U.S.-Mexico border, compared to just 43 pounds intercepted at the Canadian border.
