Harold L. Thompson, 23, has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, 26-year-old Gabriella Gonzalez, who he fatally shot after discovering she had traveled out of state for an abortion.
The sentencing took place in Dallas County Criminal Court on Monday, after a jury found Thompson guilty of the murder. Gonzalez, a mother of three, was gunned down in a gas station parking lot in May 2023.
Police reported that surveillance footage showed the couple arguing before Thompson put Gonzalez in a chokehold. After she managed to free herself, Thompson pulled out a gun and shot her multiple times in the head.
The police investigation revealed that Gonzalez had traveled to Colorado the day before for the procedure.
Abortion services have been restricted in Texas following the overturn of Roe v. Wade, making out-of-state abortions the only option for many residents.

Thompson had opposed the abortion and was reportedly the father of the child. He had a history of violent behavior, with an active warrant for assault at the time of Gonzalez’s murder.
Gonzalez had previously filed a report against Thompson for assaulting her, including incidents of physical violence, threats, and intimidation.
Her sister, Mileny Rubio, shared that Gonzalez had expressed fear for her safety and had wanted to leave Thompson, but felt trapped due to his violent behavior.
