A 17-year-old girl is facing major backlash from her mom after she changed her name in secret.
The teen, who posted anonymously on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, shared that she had been unhappy with her birth name since she was seven years old but kept her feelings to herself for years.
Over time, however, the desire to pick a name that felt more like “her” grew stronger.
Around a year ago, the teen started brainstorming possible new names. She eventually settled on the name “Piper” and began introducing it to friends, who were all supportive.
A few weeks ago, she decided she was happy with her choice and told six of her closest friends.
When she felt comfortable, she took the next step and introduced herself as Piper to new classmates at her alternate education school.

The teen then sat down with her mom to reveal her new name. At first, the mom was receptive and even mentioned calling her brother to discuss the decision.
However, things took a turn when the teen stepped into the shower. When she returned, her mom had changed her mind, calling the decision selfish and rude.

According to the teen, her mom didn’t like the name “Piper” and didn’t want it to be her daughter’s new identity. The teen stood her ground, explaining that she loved the name and felt it was a true representation of who she was.
This led to a tense argument, with the teen wondering if she had done something wrong.
Redditors were quick to reassure her, with many agreeing that she wasn’t in the wrong. Some pointed out that her mom’s sudden shift in opinion could have been influenced by someone else or by the shock of the change.
Ultimately, the teen is still determined to keep the name she’s chosen for herself, even though the situation has caused a lot of tension at home.
This post raises questions about parental control over name choices and the right for individuals, especially teenagers, to make decisions about their own identity.
While her mom might not like it, the teen’s desire to be called by a name that feels authentic to her is a powerful step toward self-empowerment.
