Suspect in Charlie Kirk Shooting Identified as Tyler Robinson, FBI Confirms

  • FBI confirms arrest: Tyler Robinson taken into custody after multiday search.
  • Governor speaks out: Spencer Cox condemns the killing as a “political assassination.”
  • Evidence trail: Surveillance footage, Discord chats, bullet casings with disturbing messages.

Federal authorities announced Friday that they have arrested Tyler Robinson in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a high-profile incident that has rattled the nation and sparked urgent conversations about political violence in America.

“Good morning ladies and gentlemen — we got him,” Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) told reporters during a Friday morning press conference, confirming Robinson’s capture after days of intensive investigation.

According to law enforcement, Robinson allegedly confessed or implied involvement in the attack to a family member, who relayed the information through a friend before it reached authorities. Governor Cox revealed that Robinson had grown “more political in recent years,” citing family accounts that he expressed disdain for Kirk’s views during a dinner conversation.

“The family member referenced a recent incident in which Robinson came to dinner prior to Sept. 10, and in the conversation with another family member, Robinson mentioned Charlie Kirk was coming to [Utah Valley University],” Cox explained. “They talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints that he had. The family member also stated Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate.”

Investigators uncovered bullet casings etched with disturbing inscriptions, including “Hey fascist, catch!” and “If you read this, you are gay, lmao.”

Surveillance footage showed Robinson arriving at the crime scene in his vehicle, while forensic evidence and facial recognition technology later confirmed his identity. Authorities also obtained Discord chats allegedly between Robinson and his roommate, where a contact named Tyler discussed retrieving a rifle hidden in a bush.

The FBI confirmed that it recovered the rifle used in the shooting, along with surveillance evidence placing Robinson at the scene. Officials noted that Robinson had “blended in well with a college institution” before the fatal attack.

Law enforcement released images of a person of interest earlier in the week, sparking an outpouring of tips after the FBI offered a $100,000 reward. FBI Director Kash Patel said more than 11,000 leads were reviewed.

“In 33 hours, we have made historic progress for Charlie,” Patel said, praising the swift investigation.

President Donald Trump also weighed in during an appearance on Fox & Friends, telling viewers: “So much work has been done over the last two and a half days. … But yeah, I think we’re in great shape. And he’s in custody.”

Charlie Kirk, 31, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Known as a staunch conservative commentator and ally of the Trump family, Kirk was closely tied to Donald Trump Jr. and other senior officials in the former administration.

The killing has been widely described as a political assassination. Governor Cox delivered a passionate call for unity, urging Americans to reject violence as a tool of political expression.

“This is certainly about the tragic death, assassination – political assassination – of Charlie Kirk. But it is also much bigger than an attack on an individual. It is an attack on all of us. It is an attack on the American experiment. It is an attack on our ideals,” Cox said.

He added: “Political violence is different than any other type of violence for lots of different reasons, one because in the very act that Charlie championed of expression, that freedom of expression that is enshrined in our founding documents, in having his life taken that … makes it more difficult for people to feel like they can share their ideas, that they can speak freely.”

Under Utah law, prosecutors have three days to file formal charges, meaning Robinson could face indictments early next week. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, with a focus on piecing together Robinson’s political motivations and digital footprint.
