Authorities in Durham, North Carolina, are investigating the brutal murder of 34-year-old nurse Auriel Lowe, whose promising career and life were cut short after meeting a man on a dating app.

Police say Christopher Whitley, 31, allegedly strangled Lowe inside her apartment on September 10, then confessed over FaceTime to a friend showing the woman’s body on camera. According to 911 recordings obtained by The News & Observer, one caller told dispatchers, “My friend just called me. He murdered his girlfriend and then switched to FaceTime … and she’s laying on the floor.”

Lowe had just begun what family members described as “her dream job” as a nurse anesthetist at Duke University Hospital, a career she had “worked tirelessly to achieve.” Her stepmother, Teresa Lowe, said the family was shattered by the tragedy, calling the death “devastating and unfathomable.”

“She was in ICU during her residency for two and [a] half years, and she had just literally gotten promoted into her career path in the operating room,” Teresa Lowe explained.

Family members told reporters that Lowe met Whitley through a dating app and had been seeing him quietly for several months. “She was being private about it,” Teresa said, adding that she believed Whitley may have been “overpowering her.”

Following the murder, investigators say Whitley locked himself inside Lowe’s apartment, texting and calling several people to admit what he had done. One acquaintance told police that Whitley confessed to committing “a crime against his girlfriend.” Initially thinking it was a joke, the friend became alarmed when Whitley sent photos of the victim.

Authorities say roughly five hours passed between the time of Lowe’s death and the moment Whitley began contacting others. The autopsy determined Lowe had been strangled around 5:30 a.m. She was later pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m.

Whitley’s relatives eventually persuaded him to surrender. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and remains held at the Durham County Detention Facility without bond.

The case has triggered renewed public concern over dating app safety and the lack of thorough background checks. According to the Observer, multiple women have since come forward online alleging Whitley had previously abused them after meeting on dating platforms.

Court records also show Whitley was convicted in Texas in 2019 for assault causing bodily injury to a family member, for which he received a suspended sentence and probation.

“She just picked the wrong guy, unfortunately, and she didn’t know how to vet him,” Teresa Lowe said. “What I’m upset about is those dating apps; they need to do more background checks.”

As the investigation continues, Lowe’s death stands as another tragic reminder of the dangers lurking within online dating platforms and the urgent need for stronger digital safety measures to protect users nationwide.
