A Minnesota man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing his neighbor during a violent confrontation over a $100 debt, a crime that stunned the Cass Lake community and underscored the tragic consequences of impulsive rage.
According to Beltrami County court records, 21-year-old Avery Cadwell pleaded guilty on October 24 to second-degree murder in the death of 28-year-old Codi Brown, who was attacked while riding his ATV along Porcupine Road in Cass Lake on June 15.
Investigators said Cadwell had earlier told a witness he was “going to get” Brown before chasing him down on foot and stabbing him once in the chest. The fatal wound caused Brown to lose control of his ATV; he managed to drive a short distance before collapsing beside the overturned vehicle.
When deputies from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m., they found Brown unresponsive and without a pulse. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.
Witnesses quickly identified Cadwell by his first name, prompting a large-scale search involving K9 units and a drone. Authorities said Cadwell eventually emerged from nearby woods and returned to his home, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Court filings revealed that Cadwell admitted to bringing a knife to confront Brown over the $100, but told officers he “regretted” carrying it and believed he had only injured his neighbor — not killed him.
Prosecutors initially sought a 40-year prison sentence, but under a plea agreement, Cadwell received 25 years for second-degree murder.
The tragic case has drawn significant attention in Minnesota crime news, highlighting how a minor financial dispute can escalate into deadly violence.
