A Florida man is accused of threatening to kill a woman and her 9-year-old son outside a Miami hotel, frightening the young boy into running for safety as he shouted, “Somebody is trying to kill us!”
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, 38-year-old Jorge Felix Larrea Diaz allegedly confronted the pair near the Barlington Hotel on Friday afternoon while armed with what witnesses described as a “long brown knife.”
Police said Larrea Diaz was looking for the woman’s husband when he approached her and the child around 4:20 p.m., speaking in Spanish and making violent threats. “Where is your husband?” he reportedly asked before pulling out the knife and warning, “I am going to cut your throat and your son’s throat.”
Moments later, the husband emerged from the hotel lobby and saw Larrea Diaz holding the weapon in his right hand, yelling that he would kill him. The man then grabbed a small bicycle in self-defense as the suspect advanced toward him, prompting Larrea Diaz to flee the scene, according to authorities.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators shows Larrea Diaz holding an object and behaving aggressively toward the mother and child.
Although officers did not recover the knife, the victims later identified Larrea Diaz, leading to his arrest. Police noted that he had changed clothes when they found him.
Larrea Diaz, who was also a guest at the hotel, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Authorities have not disclosed what prompted the confrontation or why he was searching for the husband.
