A routine welfare check in Groveland, Florida, ended in a disturbing homicide discovery after police found an elderly woman dead and her husband injured inside their home.
Officers arrived at a residence on Way Point Drive around 9 p.m. Sunday after a concerned caller reported she had not heard from the couple for several days. The caller pointed to their age and ongoing health problems as reasons for alarm. She also revealed that the pair had previously discussed a possible suicide pact involving pills.
Using a key provided by the caller, officers entered the home and encountered 82-year-old Vincent Di Fraia sitting on a couch. He was wearing a blood-stained shirt and appeared disoriented.
“Vincent Di Fraia was observed with a vacant stare and visible cuts on both of his arms, which appeared consistent with self-inflicted injuries,” the affidavit states.
He was taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.
In a bedroom, officers found his 84-year-old wife lying lifeless on a bed. A hammer was located nearby. Investigators later uncovered additional evidence, including a bloody knife on a table close to where Di Fraia had been sitting and another knife elsewhere in the home.
The scene showed signs of extreme violence. Blood spatter marked the walls and ceiling, forming patterns that suggested repeated swinging of an object during the attack.
Authorities believe the woman had been dead for more than 24 hours before the discovery. Crime scene analysts and a medical examiner confirmed the suspected cause of death as blunt-force trauma to the head.
“Upon arrival, officers found Vincent Difraia in the living room. In another part of the home, his wife was found deceased from what appeared to be blunt-force trauma to the head,” Groveland Police said in a statement.
Following further investigation and consultation with prosecutors, police obtained search warrants to examine the home and collect forensic evidence, including a blood sample from Di Fraia. He was later arrested and charged in connection with the killing.
The victim’s name has not been released. Di Fraia remains in custody at the Lake County Jail without bond as the investigation continues.
