Peabo Bryson Dies at 75: Grammy-Winning Voice Behind Disney Classics Remembered

Peabo Bryson, the Grammy-winning R&B artist whose powerful vocals helped define some of Disney’s most beloved songs, has died at the age of 75.

Bryson died peacefully at 5 p.m. on June 2 while surrounded by family and close loved ones, according to a statement released by his family. News of his passing quickly sparked tributes from fans, fellow musicians, and entertainment figures who celebrated a career that spanned decades and crossed multiple genres.

“We are tremendously moved by the outpouring of love, prayers and support from fans, friends, and colleagues around the world,” the statement said. “While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and his generous spirit. His legacy and music will live on for generations to come.”

The singer’s death came shortly after reports emerged that he had suffered a stroke. His representative confirmed on June 1 that Bryson was receiving medical treatment following the health emergency. Just two days later, the music world learned of his passing.

Born in South Carolina, Bryson became one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary R&B and adult contemporary music. His greatest commercial success arrived through a series of memorable duets, particularly his collaborations with Disney during the 1990s.

His recording of “Beauty and the Beast” alongside Celine Dion introduced the classic animated film to a global audience and became one of Disney’s signature songs. He followed that success with “A Whole New World,” performed with Regina Belle for the soundtrack of “Aladdin.”

The song became a cultural phenomenon and helped earn Bryson back-to-back Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1993 and 1994. Both Disney recordings also received nominations for Record of the Year.

Beyond Disney, Bryson built a respected catalog of R&B hits. His collaborations with the late Roberta Flack produced several fan favorites, including “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love” and “You’re Looking Like Love to Me.” The pair became one of the era’s most successful duet partnerships, blending soulful vocals with romantic ballads that remain staples on adult contemporary radio.

As a solo performer, Bryson scored major successes with songs such as “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again” and “Can You Stop the Rain.” The latter earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance in 1992. Other Grammy-recognized recordings included “Lost in the Night” and “Did You Ever Know.”

His achievements extended beyond music charts. Bryson also received a Daytime Emmy nomination alongside songwriter Earl Rose for the original song “I Found Love,” featured on the long-running television drama “All My Children.”

Health challenges marked parts of his later years. In 2019, Bryson suffered what was described as a mild heart attack. Despite setbacks, he continued recording and performing, maintaining an active presence in music long after many of his contemporaries stepped away from the spotlight.

His final studio album, “Stand for Love,” was released in 2018, underscoring his commitment to creating music even after decades in the industry.

Bryson leaves behind a legacy built on timeless ballads, chart-topping duets, and a voice that became inseparable from some of the most celebrated songs in Disney and R&B history. For generations of listeners, his music remains a lasting soundtrack to love, nostalgia, and unforgettable cinematic moments.
