Olympic gymnastics icon Simone Biles has revealed she is recovering from what she described as one of the most frightening experiences of her life after an unexpected medical emergency that led to a hospital stay.
The 29-year-old athlete shared the update with fans on Saturday through Instagram Stories, posting a photo that showed several hospital wristbands. While Biles did not disclose the medical condition that required treatment, her message suggested the incident was serious.
“I’m not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today’s age. But almost dying wasn’t on my bingo card earlier this week,” she wrote.
The seven-time Olympic gold medalist said the experience was especially difficult because her husband, Jonathan Owens, was away attending preseason training sessions with the Indianapolis Colts.
“This was one of, if not the scariest experience of my life. Especially since Jonathan [Owens] was in Indy for practices,” she continued.
Biles said she has spent much of the week resting in bed as she recovers. She also thanked friends, family members, and supporters who checked on her during the ordeal.
“I’ve been in bed resting this week, I’ll explain sooner or later, but s/o to my close circle who reached out, checked in, visited or sent flowers. Love y’all.”

In a separate post, Biles shared a photo of her bed alongside a screenshot showing a resting heart rate of 126 beats per minute. She captioned the image simply: “I’ll be here.”
The update adds another chapter to Biles’ long history of openly discussing the physical and mental challenges that come with competing at the highest level of sports.
Earlier this year, she reflected on the toll that the 2024 Summer Olympics took on her body. During the Games in Paris, Biles captured three gold medals and one silver medal, reinforcing her status as one of the most decorated gymnasts in history.
Looking back on the aftermath of the competition, she described how exhausted her body became once the events ended.
“I went back to the village, took the elevator, and my body literally collapsed,” she told L’Equipe in April 2025. “I was sick for 10 days.”
She added that even routine physical activity now requires more recovery than it once did.
“The other day, we were sprinting in the garden with friends,” she added. “I had aches and pains for three days.”
Biles has also spoken candidly about her struggles during the 2020 Summer Olympics, when she withdrew from several finals after experiencing the “twisties.” The condition causes gymnasts to lose their sense of spatial awareness while performing airborne skills, creating a significant injury risk.
Describing the experience during a 2024 appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Biles said, “It doesn’t feel comfortable, I have no idea where I am, but I’m twisting, praying I land on my feet.”
“I felt like I was fighting my body and my mind to do these tricks.”
At the time, speculation surrounded the cause of her struggles. Biles later clarified that she was not dealing with a physical injury and chose to step away to protect her safety.
“No, no injury, thankfully. That’s why I took a step back, because I didn’t want to do something silly out there and get injured.”
For now, Biles has not revealed the exact nature of her latest medical emergency. Her message focused instead on recovery, gratitude, and taking time away from the spotlight while she regains her strength.
