The unusual incidents have drawn national attention and triggered a heated debate over crime, policing, and justice.
Authorities say the people found restrained are being treated as victims while investigators work to identify whoever is responsible. Officials have also launched a search for the individual, or group, behind the attacks.
The first case was reported on June 13, when a man was discovered taped to a lamp post with the word “thief” written on his forehead. An allegedly stolen motorcycle was found nearby, leading many residents to believe the man had been caught stealing the vehicle. Similar incidents followed over the next several days, bringing the total number of cases to at least five.
Many residents have nicknamed the unknown figure “Batman” because the vigilante appears to target suspected motorcycle thieves while avoiding more serious violence. Police, however, are not convinced the incidents are the work of one person. Investigators believe multiple people could be involved, though none of those found tied up have provided information about who carried out the attacks.
Jalisco’s Secretary of Public Security, Juan Pablo Hernández, confirmed that authorities are investigating each case to determine exactly what happened and identify those responsible. He stressed that every person discovered bound to the lamp posts is currently considered a victim under the law until evidence proves otherwise.
Hernández also warned that no one should take the law into their own hands, regardless of their intentions. He said criminal investigations must remain the responsibility of law enforcement agencies.
The cases have divided opinion across Mexican social media. Critics argue that vigilante justice ignores due process and creates the risk of innocent people being targeted. Others say frustration over motorcycle theft and slow police response has pushed some residents to support the unknown vigilante’s actions.
