JONESBORO, Ark. — A driver wearing a full Spider-Man costume jumped out of his car to help a person in a wheelchair safely cross a busy street in Arkansas.
Traffic cameras recorded the entire rescue at a red light in Jonesboro. The local police department later released the video on social media, showing a person in a wheelchair struggling to make it across the traffic lanes.
That is when Christopher Hellenthal stepped in. He had been wearing the superhero outfit for a special work event at the Ultimate Air Trampoline Park. Seeing the person stuck in the road, he popped open his car door and ran over to help.
Hellenthal pushed the wheelchair quickly across the pavement to keep everyone out of danger.
”I was like, ‘All right, I’m in the Spider-Man suit; let’s do this,'” Hellenthal told WREG-TV. “So I just got out and sped them along real fast, so none of us got hit, and everyone was really nice. There was no honking or nothing like that. I just got my vehicle, and I drove off.”
He explained that he moved so fast because the traffic light turned green right after he got out of his vehicle.
Hellenthal had no idea the local police traffic camera recorded his quick rescue. He only found out about his new online fame after his mother spotted the video on Facebook.
”I was taking a nap, and my mom woke me up and said, ‘Hey, you’re on Facebook,'” he said. “I saw that it was the Jonesboro Police Department that put up that video, and we just watched it every hour and every hour. The likes and comments just kept getting higher and higher.”
He hopes the viral clip reminds everyday people to lend a helping hand whenever they can.
”I didn’t expect it to blow up like this either. I just thought it would be like a really fun thing to do, but I’m glad that people are seeing it, and I hope that people, whether they’re being watched or not, will step up and do the right thing whenever the time calls for it,” he said.
