WASHINGTON — High-profile former supporters of Donald Trump are forming a new political movement to campaign against the president ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
Former Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene announced the alliance on Saturday following a strategy meeting at media personality Tucker Carlson’s hunting lodge in Maine. Greene accused the president of breaking his core campaign promises regarding foreign conflict.
“We said no more foreign wars and we meant it and supported Donald Trump because he made that promise. But he’s betrayed us all,” Greene posted on X. “Our commitment is America First for all Americans, right, left, and center. The movement has begun.”
The meeting in Maine brought together several prominent figures who recently broke ranks with the White House. Attendees included Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie, former National Counterterrorism Center director Joe Kent, and conservative journalist Brian Glenn, whom Greene married earlier this month in Las Vegas.
Greene stepped down from her congressional seat in January after multiple clashes with the administration. She previously suggested creating a coalition that could draw voters from across the political spectrum.
Carlson has also called for a fresh political alternative. Speaking to the Columbia Journalism Review last month, he declared, “There’s going to be a third party, and I’m going to do everything I can to bring that about.” He has publicly apologized to his audience for his past support of the president.
The split deepened over military actions in the Middle East. Carlson criticized the president during a Bloomberg interview in July, describing him as “weak” for involving the country in a conflict with Iran.
Kent resigned from his counterterrorism role in March over the same issue. “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby,” Kent said in his resignation statement.
Massie recently lost his primary election after disagreeing with the White House over foreign policy and the administration’s decision not to release all government files on Jeffrey Epstein.
President Trump has sharply criticized the group. He labeled Greene a “traitor,” called Carlson a “low IQ person,” described Kent as a “sleazebag,” and called Massie “weak and pathetic.”
Greene’s social media post attracted over 5.5 million views and drawn heavy debate online. One user wrote, “Everything Trump said was a lie,” adding, “The only good question is why anyone believed him in the first place??” Another user criticized Greene directly, writing, “You’re a fraud… a terrible judge of character,” and asking, “Why should anyone listen to your assessments on anything now?”
While alternative political parties face high historical hurdles, political analysts note that this coalition could peel away vital conservative votes during an already challenging midterm election cycle for Republicans.
