LOS ANGELES — Beninese icon Angélique Kidjo officially made history in the Recording category on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The milestone honors her as the first African musician and first Black African to earn a star on the famous sidewalk.
The historic tribute caps off a 40-year journey for the five-time Grammy winner, who was born in Ouidah, Benin. Over four decades, Kidjo built a massive career spanning 18 albums. She blended traditional African sounds with jazz, funk, R&B, and global pop. Along the way, she teamed up with global powerhouses Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, and John Legend. She also elevated Nigerian superstars Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, and Mr Eazi.

Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, announced the star on behalf of the organizers.
“The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome Angélique Kidjo to the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” Martinez said.
“Angélique Kidjo’s extraordinary artistry and global influence have inspired audiences across generations and continents. We are proud to honour her as the first African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognising her remarkable contributions to music and culture around the world.”

Kidjo uses her massive global platform for more than just hit records. She actively supports girls’ education and women’s empowerment across Africa. Her work constantly creates new opportunities and visibility for younger African artists, firmly anchoring the continent’s music on the global stage.

Kidjo, 66, used the occasion to reflect on Africa’s contribution to global music. “We Africans don’t know what we’ve given to the world. Without us, there’s no music possible on this planet.”
