The Grammy-nominated rapper, best known for hits like “Praise the Lord” and “F**kin’ Problems,” now faces the possibility of years behind bars as his trial begins this week.

Mayers, 35, declined a final plea offer from prosecutors, which would have resulted in 180 days in jail.

The charges stem from an alleged altercation on November 6, 2021, where the rapper is accused of firing a handgun twice at his former friend and collaborator, Terrell Ephron, known professionally as A$AP Relli.

Ephron, who was reportedly struck by bullet fragments during the incident, filed a civil lawsuit against Mayers in August 2022, claiming assault, battery, emotional distress, and negligence.

The lawsuit alleges that the shooting occurred during a heated confrontation.

In addition to the civil suit, Ephron also filed a defamation lawsuit against Mayers and his legal team in 2023, which is still pending.

The rapper was formally charged on August 15, 2022, with two counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm.

Mayers was released on bond after the charges were filed, and a judge prohibited him from contacting the alleged victim. If convicted, the rapper could face up to 24 years in prison.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón emphasized the severity of the case, stating that discharging a firearm in a public place could have endangered innocent bystanders.

Mayers’ lead attorney, Joe Tacopina, confirmed that his client would be present at the Los Angeles courthouse for the trial, which began Tuesday.

As the legal battle unfolds, A$AP Rocky’s career and future remain in jeopardy, with much of the public’s attention on the outcome of the trial.
