The hardship of Ghana’s Economy is not just affecting food items, trotro fares amongst others that we know but also hitting hard to commercial sex workers.

The recent increase in fuel has caused a lot of mixed reactions among Ghanaian citizens as many have criticized the rulling party, NPP for failing to think about it’s citizens and also failed to deliver their promises.

As many of you are aware fuel prices in ghana has just crossed the ¢10 mark and the increase in fuel has affected a lot of things raging from food stuffs, drivers complaining same as passengers who also who board commercial vehicles to work are all in pains as they get to spend more and more money for their transportation.

Well, aside that, it has also caused commercial sex workers, those whom we normally refer to as “Ashawo” as they has also looking at the current economic hardship decided to increase their charges.

On the streets are f Accra in Ghana most of the ladies who are into this professions are not just Ghanaians but majority of them happens to be from Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Liberia among others.

The workers are also improving on their way of getting clients as some have upgraded from just staying at their usual spots to wait for a passing by male client to come to them to now going digital with social media apps for advertising especially by joining and creating more social media groups and now using the term “hook-up”.

Until recently, many of them say they had been charging ¢50 for a short session that lasts between 15-20 minutes and as much as ¢300 for a full night.

In a recent video by Joynews after visiting Lapaz, a suburb of Accra to talk to some of the ladies who find themselves in the trade, they shared their views on why they feel it is necessary for them to increase their charges and also how far and long they have been doing the business including some challenges they face sometimes.

“Some people don’t cum quick. If you know you don’t release early you have to give her more money. You have to pay the girl well to make her happy,” one of the workers told JoyNews.

One lady by the name Vivian speaking to Joynews said that the business was slowing down at a point but back in December 2021 it went back up as she sometimes even charge an amount of ¢200 for short (10-15 minutes).

“There has been an increase in goods lately. To pay my rent is difficult now and because of that, I have increased my price,” she added.
