Asisat Oshoala has joined Bay FC, a NWSL expansion team, after leaving Barcelona, the teams announced on Thursday.
With an option to extend for the 2027 season, Oshoala, 29, has inked a deal with the San Francisco Bay Area-based team that runs through 2026. She will be listed as an international player.
“To have the opportunity to add a player of Asisat’s quality, experience and winning pedigree to our roster is an exciting and important day for the club and the NWSL,” Lucy Rushton, the general manager of Bay FC, stated.
“She leads the line and gives players around her the freedom to be creative and flourish in space since she possesses a top-notch attitude, speed, and technical ability on the field. Asisat arrives to Bay FC with experience scoring goals at the highest levels of international football.
The Nigerian striker played for Liverpool and Arsenal in the Women’s Super League of England before moving to Barcelona from Dalian Quanjian in China in 2019.
During her tenure with the Catalan giants, Oshoala, a six-time African Player of the Year, won four Liga F crowns, two UEFA Women’s Champions Leagues, and three Copas de la Reina.
“To my beloved Barcelona,” she said on Instagram before joining Bay FC.
“I am feeling a range of emotions as I say goodbye to this amazing team and the city that has been my home for the past five years. Being able to represent this esteemed club and wear the Barcelona jersey has been an amazing honor and privilege.
“Since joining the squad in 2019, I’ve had the privilege of seeing some of the most significant events in the history of the organization. We have won multiple trophies as a team, and I am honored to have been a member of this group. Our accomplishments are the result of hard work and devotion.
“But more than the medals and honors, the connections I have made with some of my colleagues, coaches, staff, and incredible supporters are what I will treasure most. You have grown to be my family, and I will always be appreciative of your love and support.
“I appreciate everything that you have done. I am truly grateful for everything you have given me, and I will always be honored to represent this amazing club.”
Oshoala is the fourth-highest goalscorer in Barcelona history with 107 goals in 149 games played. She has received two nominations for the Ballon d’Or Féminin.
Bay FC will play its first season in the NWSL, sharing a venue with Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes.
