Atheist and socialist actor criticises the Bible and religion in a scathing commentary

Actor Brian Cox of “Successor” released a new, in-depth interview this week in which he harshly criticised religion and its effects on society.

The Scottish actor, a socialist and self-described atheist, claimed on a recent episode of The Starting Line podcast that religion has led people to believe false narratives about reality and has even contributed to their own “st*pidity.”

“Human beings are so f—d, basically… because they’re so st*pid,” he stated.

He continued by saying that religion has “led us into all kinds of horror,” alluding to the Holocaust and the conflicts in Gaza and the Ukraine. “The same things are being repeated again and again in belief systems which do not serve,” he stated.

The actor claimed the conflict in the Middle East is “never going to go away,” because it is fueled by these faulty systems which hurt both Muslims and Jews.

He said, “People are so st*pid… and they cannot see the writing on the wall,” as he bemoaned the lives lost in the fighting.

He contended that the issue with religion is that it prevents people from considering how they might be adding to the ills of society.

It all comes down to this concept of God, the belief that there is a higher power who watches out for us all. It’s not about that; there is no such thing, it doesn’t happen. It concerns us, and we don’t look inward nearly enough. We don’t consider our identity. Regarding how people relate to religion, he said, “We’re always looking outside of ourselves instead of looking inside ourselves.”

The Bible was deemed by him to be “one of the worst books ever.

He pointed to the creation tale of Adam and Eve in scripture to complain that “propaganda” from the holy text has contributed to a “patriarchal” society.

Succession” actor Brian Cox lamented religion’s influence on society in a new interview

“Because it starts with the idea that Adam’s rib – you know that [from] Adam’s rib, this woman was created, and they’ll believe it because they’re stupid enough.”

He went on, “It’s a mythology, not the truth.” “We’ve created that idea of God, and we’ve created it as a control issue, and it’s also a patriarchal issue… and it’s essentially patriarchal – we haven’t given enough scope to the matriarchy.”

Humans simply haven’t “evolved” to the point where we go inside ourselves to deal with our difficulties rather than seeking to solve our problems with religion, he suggested.

The “Succession” star described how he’s found more solutions to life’s questions through acting. He added that he views the “one true church” to be the theater because it “is the church of humanity.”

“It’s people dealing with… those false gods we make for ourselves and the notion of the name God anyway, is a conceit. It’s a terrible conceit that we don’t really acknowledge.
