Just twenty-four hours after arriving back at Athletic Bilbao, Inaki Williams scored in the Copa del Rey match against Barcelona.

On Wednesday night, the 29-year-old scored his ninth goal of the year to help the Basque club eliminate Xavi’s team from the Copa del Rey.

Williams didn’t take a private plane back to Spain until Tuesday, following Ghana’s elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In a group that also included Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, the Black Stars were unable to win a single game. The Athletic Bilbao forward only managed to start one game while in the Ivory Coast.

Williams boarded a private jet to return to Spain on Tuesday after Cameroon’s victory over Gambia, which officially guaranteed Ghana’s exit.

The forward then had an immediate impression when he was brought on in the second half of his team’s crucial Copa del Rey quarterfinal matchup against Barcelona.

Williams gave Athletic Bilbao a 3-2 lead in extra time before assisting his brother Nico to complete a well-earned 4-2 triumph over the Blaugrana.

After the nation’s disastrous AFCON 2023 campaign, Chris Hughton was fired, leaving the Black Stars without a coach at the moment.

The Executive Council has also chosen to dismantle the national team’s technical team, according to a statement from the Ghana FA.

Hughton succeeded Otto Addo as the coach of Ghana in February 2023, however his stint did not proceed as expected.

Under the Irishman, the Black Stars have suffered greatly over the past 11 months, winning only four of their 13 games.

Additionally, Ghana has lost all five of its previous games across all competitions, a terrible streak that included a loss to Comoros in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.
