Tuchel's status, Kane's frustration

On Sunday, Bayern Munich lost 2-3 to Bochum in the Bundesliga, marking their third loss in the previous eight days.

After a humiliating 1-0 loss to Lazio in the UEFA Champions League and a potentially title-deciding 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, Bayern suffered a defeat to a team they have defeated 7-0 on three occasions since 2021.

To put it bluntly, Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich team has been completely dysfunctional this season.

Without cohesion, without a tactical identity, and without anything that defines what constitutes a “good” football squad.

Throughout the 2023–24 season, Tuchel has relied on the individual quality of Harry Kane, Leroy Sane, and company to bail him out of a few holes; nevertheless, over the past week, the flagrant shortcomings that he has caused his club to finally surface.

In a week that saw him bench Matthijs de Ligt in favor of Eric Dier, bench Leroy Sane in favor of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, and deploy an untested three-at-the-back formation in an attempt to match Bayer Leverkusen, Tuchel guided Bayern to three straight losses that have left them eight points behind Leverkusen in the title race and on the verge of elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Lazio.

That just isn’t acceptable for a team like Bayern, who invested £150 million on Kim Min-jae and Harry Kane to bolster their lineup in the summer.

Sunday’s game was approaching, and Tuchel was adamant that Kane was “unhappy” with the treatment he was receiving. And Kane’s feelings going into the match against Bochum were certainly warranted, given that he managed just one effort on goal against Bayer Leverkusen.

Kane, though, really has nothing to complain about following the match against Bochum. The former Tottenham player had one goal throughout the match, but he also missed other easy opportunities.

The two most startling misses of the game were late in the second half and early in the first.

In the eighteenth minute, Jamal Musiala created a beautiful opportunity for Kane to double the score by playing a brilliant outside-of-the-foot pass right into his path, right into the heart of the Bochum defenders. But he blasted comically over the crossbar, with only the custodian to beat.

The striker missed an even better opportunity in the ninetieth minute. With a whipped cross, Mathys Tel found Kane entirely unmarked at the back post. However, his subsequent, achingly feeble headed effort on goal could only find the goalkeeper’s midriff.

Over the past week, a number of players have had difficulties while wearing a Bayern shirt, but none have had difficulties nearly as severe as Dayot Upamecano.

Upamecano’s careless elbow in the penalty area resulted in another red card and gave Bochum their third and game-winning goal of the match on Sunday, just four days after he was sent off in the Champions League loss to Lazio.

in addition to being sent off and giving up a penalty, the defender lost each of his five defensive duels throughout the match.

You most likely thought, “Ah, Bayern fans must be protesting how bloody awful their team is right now,” when you read the headline, “Bayern game halted due to fan protest.” However, you would be mistaken.

The intention to sell a portion of the Bundesliga’s future earnings to private sector investors has angered many fans, as seen by the two protests that forced the Vonovia Ruhrstadion to close during play.

Although potential buyer Blackstone has withdrawn from negotiations as a result of the fan-led demonstrations, which have included hurling tennis balls onto the field during games, anticipate the ensuing tension to persist as long as CVC Capital Partners is still interested in purchasing the team.
