Akinbiyi Abiola Ahmed, a rising star musician better known by his stage name Bella Shmurda, has explained why he performed at the Big Brother Naija program wearing a skirt.
The singer has been making headlines for a few days now because of a theatrical performance she gave while wearing a skit, which has sparked conversation.
On Sunday, July 31, the musician took part in a special guest appearance at the BBN live eviction program. Bella shocked many people and gained attention when he rocked the stage while wearing a skirt.
The Grammy-winning artist became a trending topic on Twitter for days as people made fun of his attempts to impersonate James Brown, Bobrisky, and other transgender people. Bella Shmurda was persuaded by others to come out as gay.
However, the self-described “newborn Fela” recently opened out about his motivations for donning skirts in an interview with media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on the Rubbin’ Minds show.
Speaking about the fallout from his involvement on the BBNaija program, the popular recording artist and performer said that he had been donning skirts for the last two years without anybody noticing.
Bella Shmurda claimed that for him, wearing a skirt is a way to establish his brand identity and to advance African culture. He said this:
“THIS IS MY OWN WAY OF BEING UNIQUE, EVERY ARTISTE HAS A WAY OF BEING IDENTIFIED, THIS IS MINE TO PROMOTE AFRICAN CULTURE.”
