The long-simmering tension between hip-hop heavyweights A$AP Rocky and Drake has finally moved from subliminal records to a direct confrontation. Breaking years of relative silence, the Harlem-born rapper characterized the ongoing friction as a “petty” dispute rooted in the past, specifically regarding their mutual history with Rihanna.
In a candid sit-down with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, Rocky (born Rakim Mayers) dismantled the mystery surrounding the fallout. Despite their early career collaborations and shared tours, the relationship has devolved into what Rocky describes as a one-sided fixation.
“We were once friends,” Rocky admitted, pinpointing the catalyst for the rift as being “over females.” The rapper suggested that Drake’s inability to move past his previous relationship with Rihanna has fueled the animosity.
Rocky didn’t hold back when addressing the nature of the “shots” fired from the OVO camp. He argued that the behavior of picking at a woman likely referring to Drake’s lyrical jabs at Rihanna on recent tracks is beneath the dignity of veteran artists.
“I feel like he wasn’t happy and he expressed that,” Rocky explained. “And I think at some certain point when everybody gettin’ older and it’s just like, you’re supposed to be moving on. For you to still be pickin’ at a female and all that, that’s soft to me.”
The timing of these comments coincides with the release of Rocky’s latest album, Don’t Be Dumb, which includes the track “Stole Ya Flow.” Fans immediately flagged the song as a rebuttal to Drake, particularly the lyrics regarding “stealing” a partner and “moving on” to fatherhood.
Rocky clarified his lack of urgency to respond sooner, stating, “I didn’t put out an album, I didn’t put out music for me to really say something back.”
While the rap world focuses on the “WWF-style” theatrics of the beef, Rocky’s personal life remains the priority. He and Rihanna, who were first linked romantically in 2020, have built a family of five. The couple shares three children: sons RZA and Riot, and their daughter Rocki, born in September 2025.
By contrast, Drake’s public sentiment toward Rihanna has appeared stagnant. In a 2018 interview on The Shop, he famously expressed a desire to have a family with the singer, a goal Rocky has since realized. For the Harlem rapper, the “beef” is less about “real smoke” and more about the refusal of a former friend to grow up.
