The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a $50,000 fine on the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) for misconduct during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
This decision follows an incident that occurred after Libya’s goalless draw with Benin on the final day of the qualifiers in Benghazi, which secured Benin’s spot in the continental competition.
The result of the match angered Libyan fans, who resorted to violent acts, throwing stones and bottles at the Benin players.
Reports suggest that the incident escalated after the final whistle, with Benin’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, revealing that both players and officials faced physical assault from fans and even police officers.
Following the event, CAF’s Disciplinary Board conducted an investigation and found the Libyan Football Federation guilty of violating Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
The violations were linked to the actions of Libyan supporters and officials during and after the match.

As a result, the LFF has been ordered to play its next two national team matches behind closed doors, and a $50,000 fine has been imposed.
This sanction comes months after another controversy involving the Libyan Football Federation.
Earlier this year, the LFF was fined the same amount for causing a disruption during a match between Libya and the Nigerian Super Eagles.
In that incident, Nigeria’s national team was stranded at Al-Abraq International Airport for over 20 hours before the match was ultimately abandoned.
CAF’s recent decision aims to address and deter misconduct and violence from fans and officials, ensuring a safer and more respectful environment during future continental qualifiers and competitions.
