A California man who vanished in 1999 has been found alive, more than 500 miles away from his home, thanks to the determination of his sister and a recent news article.

The Lassen County Sheriff’s Department announced on November 25 that the man was located in Los Angeles County, nearly 25 years after he was reported missing.

The search for the man began when his sister saw a photo of a patient in a USA Today article that had been published in April 2024.

The article highlighted an unidentified patient at St. Francis Medical Center in South Los Angeles.

The woman recognized the man in the photo and immediately contacted the sheriff’s office, believing he was her missing brother.

The missing man, who had last been heard from in Doyle, California, was reported missing in 1999. Despite years of searching, no leads had surfaced until now.

According to the sheriff’s office, the man was non-verbal and had been found without identification in South Los Angeles. After being transferred to a local hospital, his identity remained a mystery.

Deputy Derek Kennemore contacted the hospital and learned that the patient matched the missing person’s description.

With this information, authorities worked with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Missing Persons Unit, which confirmed the man’s identity through fingerprints.
