The 53-year-old leader made the announcement in Ottawa, citing a protracted political crisis that has left parliament paralyzed.

Trudeau revealed that he will remain in office as a caretaker prime minister until a new leader is selected.

His decision to resign comes amid increasing pressure from top Liberal allies, who have urged him to step down following months of political gridlock.

The situation was exacerbated by the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history, which has caused significant frustration and division within the political landscape.

As a result, parliament will be prorogued until March 24, allowing for the selection of a new leader.

“The House will now be prorogued until March 24,” Trudeau said. “I intend to resign as party leader and as prime minister.”

Trudeau’s resignation follows the December departure of key figures from his cabinet, including Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Freeland’s resignation was partly attributed to disagreements over policy issues, such as handling potential tariffs imposed by the incoming administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Polls show that Trudeau’s Liberal Party is facing a potential defeat in the upcoming general election, which must take place by late October.

As a result, the Liberals now face the urgent task of selecting an interim leader to step in as prime minister ahead of a special leadership convention.
