Chelsea has decided to forcibly remove Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from their Champions League squad.

Benoit Badiashile is also not listed on Chelsea’s UEFA squad page after joining in a £35m deal last month.

Manager Graham Potter needed to make room for January signings Joao Felix, Mykhaylo Mudryk, and Enzo Fernandez, while four other big names were left off the list, including Aubameyang.

The Blues only signed Aubameyang last summer, in a deadline-day deal that reunited him with former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel. When Tuchel was fired by Chelsea just days after the transfer window closed, the sirens may have begun to sound for the striker.

With just one Premier League goal this season, the former Arsenal forward has fallen down the pecking order under Potter, who clearly prefers other options up front. With 23 of the squad’s 25 spots already filled, supporters knew the manager would have to make a big decision.

Because UEFA rules state that only three new players can be registered for the knockout stages, Potter has been unable to select all of his new signings.

And, based on the current situation, Felix, Mudryk, and Fernandez appear to be the most likely candidates, implying that one player must withdraw. Many speculated that third-string goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, as well as out-of-favor wingers Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech, could be cut.
