In the quaint village of Cam, Gloucestershire, an adventurous rescue chicken named Billie Jean has become a local celebrity thanks to her unique sense of independence—and her high-visibility jacket. Residing at The Railway Inn, a family-run pub with over 30 years of history, Billie Jean has redefined what it means to be a free-range chicken.
For the Brimble family, who have long cared for chickens and ducks at their pub, Billie Jean has proven to be an extraordinary character. Unlike the rest of the flock, this plucky bird prefers life on her own terms, often wandering far beyond the pub’s garden.
Lucy Brimble, a bartender at The Railway Inn, shares stories of Billie’s adventurous spirit. “Locals have told me she followed them to school while they were dropping off their kids. I’ve even had to walk her back before she wandered too far and got into trouble.”
Sharron, the landlady of The Railway Inn, also noted Billie’s fearless exploration habits. “We’ve had people message us on Facebook, worried about Billie crossing roads. So, we decided to get her a high-viz jacket.”
The bright jacket has not only made Billie Jean safer but has also become her signature look. Locals and motorists can now easily spot the daring bird on her adventures. Some have even suggested additional outfits, including dungarees, to make her even more distinctive.
“She’s a real character and likes being on her own. She doesn’t enjoy the company of other chickens,” Sharron explains. Billie Jean’s independent streak and quirky behavior have endeared her to the pub’s regulars.
Interestingly, the bird wasn’t named after Michael Jackson’s hit song but after a pub patron named Billie, who often looks after the chickens.
This Billie has even treated the feathered celebrity to “mini cheddars and different types of cheese,” much to Lucy’s amusement. “She’s like any regular pub-goer,” Lucy adds with a laugh.
For now, the family is grateful that Billie’s high-viz jacket keeps her safe and ensures she spends more time at the pub where they can keep an eye on her antics. Watch video below.
