Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has issued a rare public statement condemning President Donald Trump’s call for the impeachment of a federal judge.
Roberts emphasized that impeachment is not a tool for challenging judicial decisions, reaffirming the independence of the judiciary.
“For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Roberts stated on Tuesday. “The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”
His comments follow Trump’s attack on U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, who blocked the deportation of Venezuelan migrants without due process. Trump lashed out on Truth Social, calling Boasberg a “Radical Left Lunatic” and demanding his removal.
The president has increasingly targeted judges who rule against his policies. Trump recently suggested that criticizing judges should be illegal, while his advisers continue to undermine court decisions that challenge his authority.

Last week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized judges issuing injunctions against Trump’s executive actions. “You cannot have a low-level district court judge filing an injunction to usurp the executive authority of the president of the United States, that is completely absurd,” she told reporters.
Over the weekend, the administration defied Boasberg’s ruling by proceeding with the deportation of suspected members of the Tren de Aragua gang. The White House claimed that the planes had already left U.S. airspace before the court order was received. The timeline remains in dispute.

On Tuesday, Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) filed articles of impeachment against Boasberg, arguing that his ruling endangered national security. The resolution accused the judge of overstepping his authority to “seize power from the Executive Branch and interfere with the will of the American people.”
This is not the first time Roberts has clashed with Trump. In 2018, he pushed back after Trump referred to a federal judge as an “Obama judge.” Roberts then defended the judiciary, stating that the country does not have “Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” but rather “an extraordinary group of dedicated judges.”
Trump immediately fired back, insisting that partisan bias exists in the courts. His continued attacks on the judiciary highlight the ongoing tensions between the executive branch and the legal system.
