Mustapha Salifu, the head of communications at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, has refuted rumours that a Chinese national serving in the Nsawam Prisons broke free while seeking medical attention there.

Wang Xiao was not wearing any prison clothes and had not been placed in handcuffs, according to Mr. Salifu. He mentioned that the jail guards accompanied the prisoner during his medical treatment.

“He arrived at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital with two prison guards in tow due to a toothache. When he arrived, we saw that the patient was not wearing handcuffs.

As he was not a Ghanaian, he was required to pay GHC167 for registration. He then went to the consulting room to be examined and evaluated. Then it was suggested that he get an X-ray. He was still not in handcuffs when he went for the X-ray.

“We informed them that the procedure would cost GHC616 after providing them with a brief description. Mustapha Salifu said that the prisoner claimed he didn’t have anything with him and that he was slated to report back to the hospital on Friday, February 9, but he hasn’t gone back since.

“But as far as we know, the prison officers left Korle Bu with the patient and returned to Nsawam,” the statement reads. “He left in the company of the prison officers who escorted him.”

Following claims that he escaped from detention, the Ghana Police have since designated the 39-year-old Chinese national wanted.

After being detained in Tema, Wang Xiao faced a court trial for alleged theft and was sentenced to one year in Nsawam Prison.

The Ghana Police claim that he is awaiting trial in another case involving a potentially serious offence.

Investigations are ongoing, and officers connected to the matter are being questioned.
