CONMEBOL stripped Argentina from hosting 2020 Copa América

 

The upcoming Copa América will not be staged in Argentina due to the current COVID-19 situation in the country.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the governing body wrote: “CONMEBOL informs that, in view of the present circumstances, it decided to suspend the organisation of the Copa América in Argentina.

CONMEBOL analyses the offer from other countries that have shown interest in hosting the continental tournament. News in this regard will be announced soon.”

This announcement comes just 10 days after Colombia lost its co-host status due to political instability there.

The Copa América is due to be played between 13 June and 10 July.

According to the Associated Press, strict lockdown measures were imposed in Argentina last weekend due to a seven-day average of 35,000 cases and 500 coronavirus deaths
