Xavi Hernández and Dani Alves are back together at FC Barcelona for their second spell. The difference is that Xavi is returning as first team coach, while the 38-year-old Brazilian is here to play for the blaugranes.

Xavi Hernández and Dani Alves both shared the same dressing room from 2008, when Alves arrived from Sevilla, until Xavi left for Qatar in May 2015.

They both won 19 major trophies together including five La Liga trophies and three Champions Leagues. They both achieved two trebles during in 2009 and 2015.

Dani Alves inherited the former captain’s number 6 shirt when he left for Qatar, although he only played one further season for the club, playing 48 games with eight assists and scoring one goal on the way to four major trophies, including a league and cup double, taking his overall tally at Barça to 23.

Dani Alves celebrates his trophy tittles during his first tenure at Camp Nou.

He explained why he chose to wear the number six after the  league title celebration. “I’d like to thank Xavi for having given me his number after I asked his permission” he said.

“I promised him I’d do it justice. I can’t so as well because he is unequalled at this club, but I do promise I shall wear this number with dedication, commitment and defending the colours the way I think they should be defended. I am convinced that this season I will win my sixth Liga.” he added.

The Brazilian defender will proudly wear the number 8 shirt in his second spell at Barcelona, a number that has been worn by the likes of Guillermo Amor, Hristo Stoichkov, Ludovic Giuly, Albert Celades, Phillip Cocu, Andrés Iniesta, Arthur Melo and Miralem Pjanic.

This will be the fifth different jersey number for the right back. It will not be the first time that Dani Alves has worn the number as it was his shirt for two seasons during his time at Sevilla.

The Brazilian is back in the shirt once again, only this time, as he has always wanted at FC Barcelona.

I return as excited as I was the first time,” the Brazilian said when it was announced that he would be back to the blaugranes for a second spell.

When he first came to the Club in the summer of 2008 he was given the number 20 jersey. The following four seasons he occupied the number 2 shirt before adopting the number 22 as a tribute to his team mate Éric Abidal. In his final seasons in his first spell he adopted the number 6 shirt.

Six years later the pair are back together again. There are so many good things to look forward to when the domestic season gets going again on Saturday week.
