Wack Song? Daniel Regha rates Davido’s new 'Awuke' single 2.5/10

Afrobeat sensation Davido’s latest track, “Awuke,” featuring Jamaican artist YG Marley, has sparked mixed reactions online, with social media critic Daniel Regha rating it below average.

Released on October 31, 2024, “Awuke” marked Davido’s first single of the year, creating a buzz among fans eager for new music from the Nigerian star. However, not everyone was impressed.

Regha, known for his straightforward and often hard-hitting critiques, took to Twitter (X) to share his thoughts, describing the track as “underwhelming” and suggesting it lacked depth despite its appealing rhythm.

According to Regha, the song’s lyrics showed minimal development, and Davido’s performance seemed misaligned with that of his collaborator, YG Marley.

Regha graded the song a 2.5 out of 10, hinting that Davido might be struggling creatively. In his post, he commented:

“Davido’s ‘Awuke’ ft YG Marley feels l@zy, which is disappointing since it’s his first single of 2024; The song is catchy thanks to the flow, but lyrically speaking it shows a lack of growth. The post-chorus is also completely off & could’ve been better-written to give the song some substance.

He continued: “Furthermore, YG didn’t really match Davido’s energy & didn’t nail the refrain. Hopefully, this isn’t the lead single for his next project/album, cos it feels like he (Davido) is running out of things to sing about. The track is a 2.5/10. No offense.”

Regha’s critique has since sparked discussions among fans, with some agreeing with his assessment while others defended Davido’s artistic direction.

However, Gistreel has reported that Davido’s latest song, Awuke has set a new record as the music with the highest Spotify stream in a single day of release.

The newly released song which features YG Marley managed to garner a total of 1.217 million streams on Spotify making it the first song from Africa to achieve such a milestone.
