Donald Trump may be under federal and state investigation for allegedly seeking to interfere with the election for president in 2020, but he claims that his actions were appropriate.
The twice-impeached former president, who lost to Joe Biden in the 2020 race, claimed in a recent interview’ “Life, Liberty & Levin” that he had “every right to intervene in the electoral process.
Speaking on Sunday, September 1, Trump, 78, discussed a surprise jump in his poll numbers despite the legal allegations against him.”It’s so crazy, that my poll numbers go up. Whoever heard you get indicted for interfering with a presidential election, where you have every right to do it, you get indicted, and your poll numbers go up,” he stated, as reported by The Hill. Trump further claimed, “When people get indicted, your poll numbers go down.”
Trump is facing multiple criminal accusations resulting from his alleged efforts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election.

In August 2023, a federal grand jury accused him with four criminal offenses stemming from his conduct on January 6, 2021, as well as the larger attempt to contest the election decision. Furthermore, the state of Georgia filed a 41-count indictment against Trump and 18 individuals in connection with the case.
Trump initially faced 13 felony charges, including violations of Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. However, Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee dismissed three of these allegations in March.
During his interview with Fox News, Trump described the issue as “the worst case of election interference that anyone’s ever seen, certainly in our country.”
Trump noted similarities with political procedures in “Third World countries” and sections of South America, expressing concern about setting a “bad precedent” that could alter public perceptions of the legitimacy of future elections.

Despite his escalating legal challenges, Trump remains the Republican frontrunner in the 2024 presidential election. In March, he won more than half of the GOP delegates, thereby establishing himself as the Republican nominee. In November, he will face off against Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.
The interview drew strong comments from Trump’s political opponents. Sarafina Chitika, a spokesman for Kamala Harris’ campaign, issued a statement on Monday, September 2, criticizing Trump’s remarks.
“Everything Donald Trump has promised on the campaign trail — from ‘terminating’ the Constitution, to imprisoning his political opponents and promising to rule as a dictator on ‘day one’ — makes it clear that he believes he is above the law,” Chitika’s statement read. She continued, “Now, Trump is claiming he had ‘every right’ to interfere in the 2020 election. He did not.”
Chitika emphasized the need for change, stating, “While Donald Trump is pushing his false history about the past, the American people are ready for a new forward. They know Vice President Harris is the tough-as-nails prosecutor we need to turn the page on chaos, fear, and division, and uphold the rule of law.”
