Dr. Dre is facing off against his former psychiatrist, Dr. Charles Sophy, in a legal battle that has taken a contentious turn.
The conflict erupted after Dr. Sophy filed a $10 million lawsuit against the music mogul, alleging that Dre sent him threatening messages following his involvement in Dre’s highly publicized divorce from Nicole Young.
In a letter obtained by TMZ, Dr. Dre’s attorney, Howard King, refuted Dr. Sophy’s claims, asserting that the psychiatrist engaged in malpractice and breached his professional duties.
The letter, sent in February 2023, accuses Dr. Sophy of attempting to “slander” Dre and of undermining his relationship with his son during the divorce proceedings.
King alleges that Dr. Sophy, who was initially tasked with mediating the divorce, acted in a manner that favored Nicole Young, effectively trying to turn Dre’s son against him.
This alleged manipulation, according to King, has caused significant damage to the father-son relationship, intensifying the already fraught divorce process.

The case filed Wednesday (Oct. 9) by Sophy in Los Angeles court which was obtained by Billboard accuses Dre of launching a “malicious” and “sustained” campaign of harassment against Dr. Sophy.
According to the lawsuit, Dre’s frustrations over the mediation process allegedly turned into a personal vendetta against Sophy. The lawsuit states that Dre sent late-night texts containing threats of intimidation and violence, as well as homophobic rhetoric aimed at Sophy.
Sophy, who was initially hired by Dre in 2018, says the harassment continued for nearly a year, with Dre reportedly becoming more aggressive through texts. In one particularly alarming message from February 2023, Dre told Sophy that he had been told something “disturbing” by an unnamed person, followed by a threat: “You’re going to have to pay for that.”
As the legal dispute unfolds, both parties are entrenched in their positions. Dr. Sophy maintains that he is the victim of Dre’s intimidation tactics, while Dre’s team asserts that the psychiatrist’s actions were not only unethical but also damaging to Dre’s familial ties.
