This damage disrupts the normal transmission of electrical impulses along the nerves. One of the most well-known demyelinating diseases is multiple sclerosis (MS), where the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath. Other demyelinating diseases include Guillain-Barré syndrome and leukodystrophies.

Symptoms can vary widely depending on the specific disease and the areas of the nervous system affected, but they often include weakness, numbness, tingling, and coordination problems. Treatment options aim to manage symptoms, slow the progression of the disease, and improve quality of life.
