Gareth Viccars, a 46-year-old assistant referee for the English Football League (EFL), has been charged with a disturbing child sex offence involving a teenage girl.
The charge, which involves an allegation of penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15, has sent shockwaves through the football community.
Viccars, who has officiated at various levels including the EFL, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, was arrested and appeared at Willesden Magistrates Court last week.
He is now set to face further proceedings at Snaresbrook Crown Court on March 3, where a plea will be entered. Following the allegations, Viccars has been remanded in custody and suspended from officiating any football matches.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has confirmed that Viccars has not officiated any matches this season and that he was suspended as soon as the allegations came to light.
His profile indicates he had been a prominent figure in football officiating since the 2018-19 season, and his involvement in the Premier League 2 (under-21 league) dates back to 2015-16.
The case has raised significant concerns in the football world, with many waiting to see how the legal process unfolds.
Authorities have not provided further details at this time, as the investigation is ongoing. The Football Association (FA) has yet to comment on the matter.
