ReaTo take first place in the group, Erik ten Hag’s team needed to defeat Spanish opponents by two goals or more to take the first place.

Garnacho’s only goal gave gave Man United hope but Ten Hag’s side failed to add a second goal to top the group.

Ronaldo had a fantastic opportunity to extend the lead with a lob that he mishandled and sent onto the roof of the net before David de Gea’s excellent double save to deny Andoni Gorosabel and Pablo Marin.

Man United had total control of the game in the first half but failed to do so after the break.

The Red Devils struggled to muster a single shot on goal and ended the game with Harry Maguire, a substitute, up front with Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford.

Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, and Antony were all absent due to illness and injury made Garnacho a starter against the Spanish side.

Alejandro Garnacho celebrates with team mate Cristiano Ronaldo after scoring his first goal.

The youngster excelled from the left wing to score the game’s lone goal in the 17th minute after receiving a perfectly timed pass from Ronaldo outside the penalty area and finishing inside the box.

According to Erik ten Hag, Alejandro Garnacho is growing into a “reliable” attacker for Manchester United.

“He’s developing very well. I hope he can keep that attitude like now. When he is reliable, you see he is a threat, he can create, he can give final passes and he can score goals, so it’s a good process.”

Bruno Fernandes also spoke about the youngster’s performance Spain.

“He is still only young but he is doing very well,” said Fernandes after the game.

“At the beginning of the season he was not at his best. He didn’t have the best attitude that he should have on tour. But he is deserving of his chances now.”

Throughout the second half, Ten Hag gave off the impression that he was dissatisfied with the officials, but he was gracious in his post-game press conference.

“The (Sociedad) fans did everything in the environment to get the tempo out of the game and they’ve succeeded with it by only losing 1-0.”

“I congratulate them on the victory. We are united, we are always disappointed when we are not number one but we have some positives to take to Manchester.”

“We are of course, disappointed we didn’t succeed by scoring with a two-goal difference,” Ten Hag said.

“But we win, a clean sheet, a positive we have extra options in the frontline with Garnacho.”

Real Sociedad, who advanced to the round of 16, finished the group stage tied with United on 15 points, but had a better goal differential.

The Red Devils will now participate in the knockout round play-offs in February, when they will compete against a team that is dropping out of the Champions League.

Barcelona, Juventus, Ajax whom Ten Hag oversaw for five years, and Shakhtar Donetsk—of Ukraine are among of the teams they might face over two legs.

Sevilla, Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting Lisbon, Red Bull and Salzburg are all in Monday’s knockout round draw.
