The dramatic rescue unfolded at Indian Beach, where the pair’s situation was spotted by a concerned bystander who saw them drifting north before losing sight of them.

The U.S. Coast Guard was quickly alerted and, in coordination with the Cannon Beach Fire District, launched a rescue operation.

Emergency crews arrived at the beach just after 12:30 p.m., and within 12 minutes, they made contact with the stranded father and son, who were stuck on a rock at the north end of the beach.

Because of the dangerous ocean conditions and the difficult location of the boogie boarders, the U.S. Coast Guard diverted a helicopter from Air Station Astoria, which was already in the area on a training flight.

The helicopter assisted in hoisting the father and son to safety, bringing them to Ecola State Park where they were evaluated for injuries. Fortunately, both declined further medical treatment and were unharmed.

This incident was one of several rescues carried out by the Cannon Beach Fire District in just the past week.

The National Weather Service had issued a Beach Hazards Statement on January 19, warning of “sneaker waves,” which can unexpectedly pull people into the ocean and sweep them over rocks or jetties.

Officials urge visitors to the coast to remain cautious and keep children and pets away from the surf during such warnings to prevent further accidents.
