Fenerbahçe's Bid: A Lifeline for Anthony Martial's Career Resurgence

Turkish club Fenerbahçe has extended an opportunity for 28-year-old Manchester United forward Anthony Martial to depart Old Trafford as his contract reaches its final six months, allowing him to explore options with overseas clubs.

Despite a noteworthy career at United since his arrival in 2015, amassing 90 goals in 317 appearances, Martial’s recent performances have been less impressive.

The Sun reports that Fenerbahçe has proposed an initial offer of £6.8m this month, leveraging their positive relations with Manchester United to facilitate a favorable transfer deal.

Martial’s tenure at Manchester United, which commenced in 2015 following his move from Monaco, has been characterized by both peaks and valleys.

Despite an initial display of potential and a commendable goal tally, his consistency has wavered. A loan stint at Sevilla in the 2020/21 season yielded only one goal in 12 games.

Returning to United, he managed nine goals in 29 appearances last season, but the current term has seen him score just two goals in 19 matches.

Recent remarks by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag raised eyebrows, revealing ongoing contract renewal discussions with Martial and another French player, despite their irregular starting roles.

However, Manchester Evening News now reports that internal deliberations within the club are still ongoing regarding the renewals for these two players.

Erik ten Hag provided an update during a press conference on Thursday, stating, “We are engaged in discussions with Rapha Varane and Anthony Martial, and we have activated the options on Lindelof, Hannibal, and Wan-Bissaka.”

“That is an internal discussion between the club and the player.”

Both Martial and Varane have faced challenges in the current campaign, with injuries causing fluctuations in their appearances in the starting lineup under Ten Hag.

Varane, in particular, experienced a loss of confidence from the manager and subsequently fell behind Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans in the pecking order.

The duo is expected to feature in the upcoming FA Cup third-round clash against Wigan Athletic on Monday, January 8.

Once filled with promise, Anthony Martial’s Manchester United journey has evolved into a narrative of untapped potential.

The irregularity in his performances has been a significant hurdle, preventing him from solidifying a permanent role within the team.

Fenerbahçe’s offer now emerges as a chance for Martial to reignite his form in a fresh setting, possibly rejuvenating his career.
