What a win for Manchester United! They surely seal their passage to the last 16 at the first time of asking, with four away goals to no reply.

They could have been out of sight in the first half as Rashford and McTominay missed good chances, but led at the break as Fernandes capitalised on a defensive error and made it 1-0.

Rashford picks up the ball on the left and scoops a ball over the top for Fernandes. Remiro, who has been excellent, comes out to claim the ball but he’s wiped out by his own team-mate as Le Normand tries to hoof it clear. Both end up on the floor, and Fernandes is able to side-foot home into an empty net.

He Fernandes got his second after the interval after a neat bit of play with Rashford and James, confirmed by VAR after the linesman had initially flagged it offside.

Rashford got himself a goal on the counter soon after before James put Solskjaer’s side out of reach with a composed finish in the dying moments.

Sociedad were a long way from their best, but United won’t care one bit.

The return leg is a week today, at Old Trafford on February 25.

United follow that game with Premier League matches away to Chelsea and Man City, so the Sociedad game is a good chance to rest and rotate with the tie surely done and dusted.
