A quiet Florida neighborhood was shaken after a 25-year-old man allegedly carried out a brutal and unprovoked attack, killing a woman in her 70s who had been walking her dog in broad daylight.
Authorities say the suspect, Kersten Francilus, is now facing a first-degree murder charge following the violent incident, which unfolded Thursday afternoon in Martin County. Investigators believe the attack was random, with no known connection between the victim and the accused.
According to officials, the situation escalated rapidly. Residents had earlier contacted emergency services after noticing Francilus moving through the neighborhood, knocking on doors and asking unusual questions about a “new bank.”
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek addressed reporters, explaining the strange behavior that first raised concern. “There’s no bank around here,” he said, noting that the inquiries seemed out of place in the residential area.
Moments later, the situation turned deadly.
Emergency calls began flooding in, reporting a violent assault in progress. Deputies arriving at the scene encountered a horrifying sight.
Prosecutors later described the attack in court, stating, “He stabbed her … upwards of 16 times and was actively stabbing her while the responding deputy responded to the scene.” The suspect reportedly admitted to the killing when questioned by law enforcement, adding that the only detail he could provide about the victim was her religious identity.
A responding deputy ordered Francilus to stop. He complied and surrendered at the scene.
Paramedics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, but she was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet publicly identified her.
Investigators say Francilus lived nearby with his mother and wife. His family later confirmed that the weapon used in the attack was a steak knife taken from their kitchen. Law enforcement officials also revealed that deputies had previously been called to the suspect’s home over reports of unusual behavior, though no serious incidents had been recorded before.
Despite the shocking nature of the crime, witnesses described Francilus as calm shortly before the attack. Neighbors who interacted with him said he showed no signs of aggression and did not appear to be armed.
“When they engaged in the conversation and told him there was no bank here, he kind of just turned off and meandered back down the driveway, not being confrontational. He never really was confrontational with anybody he interacted with,” Sheriff Budensiek explained.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind what they describe as a deeply disturbing and senseless act.
“At this point, this appears like an extremely violent, random act of violence, really an odd set of circumstances for this nice neighborhood,” Budensiek said. “… We just simply know that we’ve had a horrendous crime that’s taken place in this neighborhood.”
Francilus is currently being held in the Martin County Jail without bond as the case moves forward.
