A three-year legal saga in Central Florida reached a definitive end this week as 75-year-old George Hachey was transported to state prison to begin an 18-year sentence. The sentencing follows his “no contest” plea regarding the 2022 attempted murder of his wife, an attack motivated by a looming divorce in the retirement community of The Villages.
The violent encounter occurred on the morning of September 28, 2022, just days after 71-year-old Margery Greene had officially filed for divorce.
According to court records, the domestic dispute escalated into a brutal physical assault when Hachey stabbed Greene multiple times. Despite sustaining critical injuries to her legs, abdomen, and chest, Greene managed to contact emergency services at 7:40 a.m., a move that likely saved her life.
When deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the residence, they discovered a harrowing scene. Greene was found on the bedroom floor, pleading with the first responder, “Don’t let me die.” In the living room, Hachey sat unresponsive in a recliner, covered in blood with a pocketknife in his lap, following what authorities described as a failed suicide attempt.
Testimony from the scene highlighted the premeditated nature of the violence. When questioned about the moments leading up to the stabbing, Greene informed a deputy that Hachey told her, “You’ve ruined my life, and now I’m going to end yours.”
Even while receiving medical treatment at the hospital, Hachey remained blunt about his intentions, telling a detective, “I just tried killing my wife. I don’t want help, I want to die.”
Both survived their injuries, leading to a protracted legal process. The 18-year sentence handed down on December 16, 2025, accounts for time already served during his detention.
According to the Florida Department of Corrections, Hachey is now in custody with a projected release date of September 2040, at which point he will be 90 years old.
