Authorities in the Florida Keys say a domestic dispute over a $5 mobile app payment escalated into a violent confrontation that left a man injured and his girlfriend behind bars on a $75,000 bond.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old Danielle Banks allegedly attacked her boyfriend on Thursday after spotting a $5 transfer he made to a “female friend.” Investigators said the discovery sparked an argument that quickly turned physical inside the couple’s Marathon home.
Police said Banks became “upset” and “confronted” her boyfriend before calling him “derogatory names.” The arrest report states she “struck him multiple times in the mouth” and tore his shirt, which responding deputies noted was stained with blood.
Moments later, she allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and hurled it “overhand” toward his head, cutting his face.
Banks reportedly fled the home in her vehicle as her boyfriend called 911, telling dispatchers that she had “stabbed him in the face” and driven off. A nearby U.S. Border Patrol agent spotted her and followed the vehicle until she stopped at a nearby apartment complex. Deputies arrived shortly after and observed Banks attempting to hide by ducking inside the car.
Once detained, police say Banks denied attacking her boyfriend, claiming instead that she “threw a plate into the sink,” and a “shard” from the broken dish must have injured him. She later invoked her right to remain silent.
Investigators noted that the boyfriend refused to provide a written statement and did not allow deputies to retrieve the knife from inside the home, saying “the property did not belong to him.” First responders treated him at the scene before he left with his brother.
Banks was charged with aggravated battery and resisting arrest without violence. She remains in custody at the Monroe County Jail. Her arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 21.
